DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: OSAKA - KYOTO

On arrival at Osaka Airport, you will be met by an English-speaking assistant who will give you the tickets for your shared shuttle minibus transfer to Kyoto. They will advise you on the best stop for reaching your hotel and help you activate your Japan Rail Pass. If needed, they can also help you arrange and book some of the train journeys planned between days 4 and 10.

You will then head to Kyoto, the former imperial capital
and a true guardian of Japanese traditions. With its beautifully designed gardens, historic temples, vividly coloured shrines and serene neighbourhoods, the city offers a fascinating first glimpse into Japanese culture and way of life.

Day 2: Kyoto

Enjoy a full-day tour of Kyoto with your private French-speaking local guide. Begin at the famous Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, whose gilded façades are elegantly reflected in the pond. Continue to Ryoan-ji, a Buddhist temple renowned for its minimalist Zen garden.

Continue your tour at Nijo Castle, the former residence of the Tokugawa shoguns, before heading to the remarkable Kiyomizu-dera, perched above Kyoto and offering beautiful views over the city.

At the end of the day, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the historic Gion district, with its charming narrow streets, traditional wooden houses and old teahouses. An iconic district of geiko and maiko, Gion still retains much of the elegance of Kyoto in days gone by.

Day 3: Kyoto

The following day, explore the surrounding area or discover the city at your own pace (see the “Go Further” sections of this brochure or contact us).

Day 4: Kyoto - Hiroshima - Miyajima

If you wish, you can leave your main luggage at your hotel in Kyoto and pack a lighter bag with everything you need for the next two nights in Miyajima and Naoshima.

Using your Japan Rail Pass, take the train to Hiroshima. Deeply affected by the events of 6 August 1945, the city has rebuilt itself and become an international symbol of peace and remembrance. Visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, one of the few buildings left standing after the explosion, as well as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which tells the story of the city and the aftermath of the bombing.

You will then continue your journey by ferry to Miyajima, a sacred island in Shintoism and one of Japan’s most iconic destinations. Discover the famous Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised by its majestic red torii gate, which appears to float on the sea at high tide.

Towering above the island, Mount Misen offers wonderful walking opportunities amid lush vegetation. In autumn, the maples take on beautiful colours, while deer roam freely along the trails and around the park.

In the evening, enjoy Miyajima’s peaceful atmosphere with dinner and an overnight stay in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn that offers a wonderful insight into another side of Japanese life.

Day 5: MIYAJIMA - NAOSHIMA

After your Japanese breakfast, set off for Naoshima using your Japan Rail Pass. First, take the ferry to Miyajimaguchi, then a local train to Hiroshima, a journey of around 30 minutes. Continue by bullet train to Okayama (approximately 45 minutes), before travelling on to Uno, changing at Chayamachi (approximately 1 hour).

From Uno Station, a short walk takes you to the port, where you can board the ferry to Naoshima. Ferry tickets must be paid for directly on site. On arrival on the island, a shuttle will take you to your hotel, Benesse House. Availability is limited, so we recommend booking well in advance.

Once a fishing island in the Seto Inland Sea, Naoshima is now a must-visit destination for contemporary art and architecture lovers. Monumental works, outdoor installations and museums blend harmoniously into the island’s natural landscape. Several iconic sites were designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, whose minimalist architecture plays with light, concrete and the surroundings.

A unique stop where art, architecture and nature come together in a particularly peaceful island setting.

Day 6: Naoshima - Kyoto

After your stay in Naoshima, take the ferry back to Uno Port. The fare is payable directly on site.

Using your Japan Rail Pass, continue by train to Okayama, changing at Chayamachi, for a journey of approximately one hour. From Okayama, board the bullet train to Kyoto, arriving after around 1 hour 30 minutes.

You will return to Kyoto for an overnight stay before continuing your journey the following day to the mountainous scenery and traditional villages of the Japanese Alps.

Day 7: Kyoto - Kanazawa

Your main luggage will be transferred directly from Kyoto to Tokyo. Remember to pack a lighter bag with everything you need for the next two nights in the Japanese Alps.

Take the train from Kyoto to Kanazawa using your Japan Rail Pass, for a journey of approximately two hours. With its historic heritage, artisan traditions and refined gardens, this former feudal city offers a wonderful glimpse of Japan in the Edo period.

You can visit the Kenroku-en, considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful landscape gardens. Continue exploring Kanazawa’s historic districts, where narrow streets and traditional houses still bear witness to the city’s past. A visit to a former samurai residence and its elegant Japanese garden will complete this immersion in Japanese history and culture.

Day 8: Kanazawa - Shirakawago - TAKAYAMA

Travel by bus to Shirakawago, included in your itinerary. Nestled in the heart of the mountains, this traditional village is famous for its gassho-zukuri houses with imposing thatched roofs, specially designed to withstand the region’s heavy snowfall. Enjoy a stroll through the village and discover its peaceful atmosphere and well-preserved rural heritage.

You will then continue by bus to Takayama, a charming city in the Japanese Alps renowned for its historic centre and traditions. Stroll among old wooden houses, small craft shops and sake breweries, before discovering one of the region’s great culinary specialities: the famous Hida beef, prized for its tender, finely marbled meat.

Day 9: TAKAYAMA - TOKYO

Using your Japan Rail Pass, take the train to Nagoya, a journey of approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. Continue by bullet train to Tokyo, arriving after around 1 hour 30 minutes.

On arrival, enjoy some free time to take your first steps in the Japanese capital. With its lively neighbourhoods, skyscrapers, neon signs and characterful little streets, Tokyo immediately reveals its incredible energy. This first glimpse will give you a feel for the city before you explore it in greater depth with your guide on day 11.

Day 10: Tokyo - Hakone - Tokyo

Set off on a day trip to the Hakone region, easily reached by train using your Japan Rail Pass. On arrival at Odawara Station, use your Hakone Free Pass, included in the programme, to explore the region by its various modes of transport.

Throughout the day, you will discover spectacular scenery and, weather permitting, enjoy magnificent views of Mount Fuji. The route will take you to the 5th Station, located on the slopes of the famous volcano.

Continue your exploration by cable car above the volcanic areas, where sulphurous steam still rises, before heading to Lake Ashi. Enjoy a pleasant cruise across its waters, surrounded by mountains and the region’s iconic natural scenery.

At the end of the day, return by train after this journey through volcanoes, lakes and views of Mount Fuji.

Day 11: Tokyo

Enjoy a full-day tour of Tokyo with your private French-speaking local guide. Start at the famous Tokyo Tower, one of the capital’s landmarks, before heading to the Imperial Palace Plaza, the official residence of the Emperor of Japan, surrounded by gardens and the remains of the former Edo Castle.

Continue exploring the elegant Ginza district, renowned for its department stores, contemporary architecture and refined boutiques. Then change pace at Hamarikyu Gardens, a true green haven amid the skyscrapers, where you can enjoy a relaxing tea break.

The day continues with a cruise along the Sumida River, offering a different perspective on Tokyo and its neighbourhoods. You will then head to Asakusa to visit Senso-ji, considered the capital’s oldest Buddhist temple. Its monumental gates, lanterns and traditional shopping streets offer a striking contrast with Tokyo’s distinctly modern side.

Days 12 & 13: TOKYO

Make the most of your free time to explore Tokyo at your own pace. It’s a great opportunity to revisit your favourite neighbourhoods, do some shopping, discover new places or simply soak up the buzz of the Japanese capital one last time. Additional excursions can also be arranged on request, according to your wishes.
