A rich historical heritage

Greece has one of the richest and most influential historical heritages in the world, steeped in millennia of civilisation and culture. At the heart of this wealth is the legacy of ancient Greece, whose contributions to philosophy, politics, art and science have shaped the Western world. From the Acropolis of Athens dominated by the Parthenon, symbol of democracy and the grandeur of Greek civilisation, to the majestic temples of Delphi, once the spiritual centre of ancient Greece, and the remains of great cities such as Mycenae and Olympia, where the Olympic Games were born, every corner of the country reveals unique historical treasures. Greece is also home to Byzantine treasures, such as magnificent churches and hilltop monasteries, as well as Roman remains, such as ancient theatres and aqueducts.

The diversity of the landscape

Greece is a country renowned for its remarkable diversity of landscapes. In the north, imposing mountains such as Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the Greek gods, contrast with lush green valleys and deep gorges carved out by tumultuous rivers. On the mainland, remarkable sites such as Meteora, with its monasteries perched on spectacular rock formations, offer breathtaking panoramas and unforgettable hiking opportunities. Greece also has fertile valleys where olive groves and vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, while the rocky plateaux offer impressive lunar landscapes, particularly in Aetolia-Acarnania and Thessaly. The Greek coastline, meanwhile, boasts thousands of kilometres of coastline, alternating between idyllic golden sandy beaches, secluded coves, sheer cliffs and tranquil bays with crystal-clear waters. The Greek islands add another dimension to this diversity, from the Cyclades of whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches, to the verdant Ionian Islands, the volcanic landscapes of Santorini and the pine forests of Skiathos.

Warm hospitality

Warm hospitality is a characteristic that has been deeply rooted in Greek culture for centuries. Greeks are known for their warm welcome and generosity towards visitors. When you travel to Greece, you can expect to be greeted with a friendly smile and an open attitude. Locals are often willing to help and share their culture and traditions with visitors, whether by recommending places to visit, offering local food or drink, or simply engaging in friendly conversation.

Delicious local cuisine

Greek cuisine is a veritable symphony of Mediterranean flavours, renowned for its simplicity, freshness and balance. At the heart of this cuisine are quality ingredients such as olives, extra virgin olive oil, aromatic herbs, fresh vegetables, fish and seafood, as well as dairy products such as the famous feta cheese.

Signature dishes of Greek cuisine include souvlaki, skewers of marinated and grilled meat served with pita bread, vegetables and tzatziki sauce. Moussaka is another must, made with layers of aubergine, minced meat, potatoes and béchamel sauce, all baked to a golden, au gratin crust. Mezzes, small side dishes, offer a variety of flavours with dishes such as dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves), spanakopita (spinach and feta puff pastry) and fava (split pea purée).

For dessert, Greek sweets include baklava, a delicious nut and honey dessert, and loukoumades, fried doughnuts dipped in syrup. To accompany meals, Greek wines offer a diverse range of indigenous varieties such as assyrtiko and xinomavro, while traditional spirits such as ouzo add a touch of authenticity.

A Mediterranean climate

The climate in Greece is predominantly Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Summers, from June to September, are hot with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C, ideal for enjoying beaches and outdoor activities. Autumns, from October to November, are mild with increasing rainfall and falling temperatures. Winters, from December to February, are mild on the coasts but colder in the mountainous regions, with average temperatures of 5°C to 15°C and frequent rainfall. Spring, from March to May, is a pleasant time to visit the country, with mild temperatures and lush green landscapes. However, due to its varied geography, the climate can vary considerably from one region to another.

A multitude of islands to visit

Greece boasts a vast archipelago of over 6,000 islands and islets, offering an incredible variety of destinations to discover. Among the most popular are such gems as Santorini, with its clifftop villages offering unforgettable sunsets, Mykonos for its lively nightlife and magnificent beaches, Corfu with its unique blend of Venetian and Greek influences, and Rhodes for its medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other must-see islands include Rhodes, Crete, Milos, Naxos, Paros and many more ....
